I believe this is a very rare cardboard poster that most likely was displayed in the showroom of an International Harvester farm equipment dealership back the late 1950’s. I can never recall ever having seen a poster like this before. The outside measures 35 inches high by 45 inches wide. I believe the scene in the center of the image shows 3 International Harvester Model 141 self propelled grain combines at work in a large grain field. This item is still in relatively good condition for such a fragile paper item that is now nearly 60 years old. There are a few minor scrapes on the image but they don’t significantly detract from the beauty of this piece. In my opinion, the worst part of this gorgeous print is the de-laminating cardboard on the simulated wood frame in the upper right corner. One could frame this item and have the frame or matting cover the damaged simulated wood frame. The original artwork for this print was painted by Raymond Hosford, was signed by him and was dated 8/58. The year 1958 corresponds with the vintage of the 3 combines shown in the image. I have no idea regarding the significance of the letters “RDEES” written in black ink on the simulated wood frame in the lower right hand corner. Please enlighten me regarding this bit of information if you possibly can. I have spent several hours researching the artist Raymond Hosford and his beautiful paintings. The last photo on this listing shows a print that is “NOT” part of this listing. I have included it here to give you a better idea of what Rayond painted in his career. The title of that print is “For Amber Waves Of Grain” and it was part of a group of 12 prints that were published by the Franklin Mint back in the mid-1970’s as part of the celebration of the Bicentenial of the USA. Through an internet search, I learned that both Raymond and his wife passed away several years ago. I learned that Raymond was an artist in the mid-west for many years and worked for International Harvester Company for several years. He and his wife moved to Colorado where they continued to be active in the field of art for many years. I was successful in contacting one of Raymond’s daughters who has promised to send me some images of more of his work. I have not received anything from her yet. I would dearly love to find a print of Raymond’s that shows tractors like the IH 660, 560, 460, 340, 240, 140 or any of the IH pickups or trucks from the 1950’s or 1960’s. PLEASE contact me if you have or even have seen any such similar IH artwork from this era. I would think that a large poster that shows a combine in more detail would be more effective in helping the dealer sell combines. Perhaps this poster was some kind of award from IH to their more successful combine retailers. Since the machines in this piece are not harvesting corn, I assume that this piece was available or distributed mainly in the western “Grain Belt” states rather than the mid-west or eastern part of this country. I have a lot of friends in the collectible car, truck, tractor, farm toy, sign and other hobbies that travel throughout the USA this time or year. They may be able to safely and economically deliver this gem to you depending on where you live and how patient you are. Thanks a lot, Bob Woodburn in Bozeman Montana USA.
