In 1980, I had been working for IHC for three years. As a hick from a small town, I was excited to be working for the 4th largest company in America. I had recently been promoted and was looking forward to a long, rewarding career. A year later, I was out of a job, along with most of my coworkers. Then they either got canned or were sent somewhere in Kansas to finish out their careers. The cause of this, or course, was the Great IH Strike of 1980-81. Over the course of six months, management and the workers collectively managed to euthanize what at the time was a thriving organization. Anyway, since I turned down the job that I was offered, I ended up being in charge of closing down the office. Then I locked the door for the last time, and moved on.
